If Rosalind Krauss was writing this analysis on video art, there would a twist now. First of all, other then analyzing what the artist is doing in the video, we need to look at what they are trying to achieve. Krauss, sees this medium like a physiological statement rather and a physical one. She talks about the disintegration of time and alienation of self during construction of a narcissistic “statue”. She argues that the act is to create herself with the prompt feedback from the camera.
She says that this process of artist shows that they are narcissist’ since their self is perceived higher and their interaction with the mirrored digital images includes destabilizing, shattering, removal from the previous self in time and the of reinventing a new self,
Yes, like Krauss said, the video of Richard Serra “ The Boomerang” is an example of a mirror; it carries the reflecting and reflexive elements. The artist achieves his goal by self-alienation and self-reflection. Furthermore in the article it reads that “artist uses his/her body as the bridge between the monitor and the camera (illustrated with the classic Vito Acconci ‘s Centers) and therefore it is also the center point between the viewer and the camera.”
However, in 2015 I would definitely argue those elements in a different way. Media. I don’t think that what artists are doing a narcissistic behavior, but they are condemning the media and its effects on the society. Media nowadays makes us feel distant from ourselves and from the environment. However, the aim of the media is to connect people. Each of the video shows the same effect. Also, the media can change people for better or worse. The idea of perfection is a reoccurring subject of the media. For kids it’s Barbie, for teens and adults it’s reality shows. Though the impact of media exposure and body dissatisfaction appears strong in adult males and females. People diverge from their inner self and try to become a totally different person, just like the reflexive and the reflective voice in the video of Serra. Artists are not trying to be narcissistic or trying to show themselves off through this medium, they just want to show how the input of the media affects people. Our lives are now based on social media, TV, in our spare time other then connecting with ourselves or with people that we love, we just go online and pretend to be talking and truly engaging in communication.
The article of Krauss would definitely be different now, she would add the exposure of media and thee effects of it. She could definitely see the connection between the harmful effect of media and the messages that these artists are trying to convey.
